Cody's Corner - The Ballad of
Frank Slide
- The Ballad of Frank Slide
- (By Cody Keith, copyright 2004)
-
Rescuers stood in shock in the year 1903
Charlie the horse survived, is how it was told to me
He lived on little food and little drink
For he and the town had no time to think
Others weren't so lucky as Heaven beckoned
When Turtle Mountain came down in just 90 seconds
The town of Frank was not theirs to save
To this day it lies in a silent rocky grave
Charlie neighed on his first fresh breath
Knowing he had escaped his dance with death
Some miners tunneled up to find their way
To taste freedom is what their grandchildren say
The sleeping town had not a hope nor a chance
Unaware they couldn't stop Mother Nature's advance
Over 100 people died on that horrible night
Snuggled in their beds waiting for morning's light
Charlie has been gone for many years now
And scientists are still asking the why and how
The over mined mountain came down with a boom
And incased Frank in a limestone tomb
Alberta's aboriginals said it would crash and fall
What's left of "the mountain that moves" still stands
tall
Stop for a moment and remember those who died
And so I end my ballad of Frank Slide
