A Mallard's Tale
Diamond Doug Keith , copyright Ducks Unlimited 2004

This here's a mallard's tale
A little stranger than most
For it's not 'bout migratin' 'n such
No it's a little more verbose
Cowboys of all shapes and sizes
Love their horse, dog and truck
But history will recall but one
Who loved a one eyed duck

Curly Joe was a real top hand
Adorned with moustache and scowl
He rode with the big ranches
Accompanied by that waterfowl
Perched atop his saddle horn
With just one eye he had a nack
Of spottin' strays in the willows
Then tellin' Curly with a quack

In the bunkhouse late at night
The boys would laugh and tease
And it was the general consensus
Curly's inflicted with a mental disease
For a Cowboy to love a mallard so
His saddlebags must be only half full
To snuggle with his feathered friend
This man who's roped bear and bull

And he dreamt 'n talked of a day
When wetlands would abound
With unlimited ducks 'n fowl
And down would cover up the ground
After years 'one the boys finally said
"What the heck's wrong with you?
We're all tired of yer squawk 'n banter
Why don't ya just join D.U.?"

Bonus Verse
On joining the prestigious organization
Curly found folks who feel the same
Though never seen during huntin' season
Curly the cowboy found feathered fame
With his eyepatched, duck billed sidekick
And the bumper sticker upon his truck
That simply read with cowboy pride
"Lord Love a Duck".
